All is fair in love and war... but what is "fair"???

My mom told me to play fair... It seems that she might not have been able to tell me that if I grew up in France, Germany, Thailand, Kenya, China, India, etc. because according to an Atlantic article, Fair's fair, by economist Bart Wilson, fair is untranslatable in any other language!!! Who knew?

So I am wondering how folks say, "Fair ball" or "Fair wages" or "Fair trade coffee" or "You're not just looking fair tonight; you're looking fine!" in other languages???

Also check out this blog post from Altalang.com/beyond-words/ which highlights the original article from the Atlanta and provides some interesting comments to read about a word, which I though was pretty universal.
